A Notary Public Is Not A Notario Público In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, a Notario Público is a trainedattorney with special expertise. A Mexican “notario” can, therefore, give legaladvice and prepare legal forms. An Illinois notary does not have this authority. Infact, Illinois notaries who are not attorneys and who advertise notarial services ina language other than English must post a notice in English and the language inwhich the advertisement appears which states: “I AM NOT AN ATTORNEYLICENSED TO PRACTICE LAW IN ILLINOIS AND MAY NOT GIVE LEGAL ADVICEOR ACCEPT FEES FOR LEGAL ADVICE.” If an Illinois notary is approached forhelp with a legal matter, the notary should refer the person to an attorney. |
