Notary pulics have been an integral part of our globe’s many societies. As far back as ancient Rome Notaries have been depended upon to act as impartial, unbiased, guardians of business.
In our society, business is being conducted on a broader, more global scale. Transactions are no longer kept withinn our borders. One of the roles a Notary Public can have is to safeguard these transactions.
Steps to safeguard Notary and business transactions:
Law: Get to know your notary state laws and do not practice law or give advice. The signer is the one who tells you what they want done.
· W Witnessing: Being impartial and nonpartisan to the transaction. Meaning that you have no benefit or financial interest to the notarization being carried out.
· Idnetification: a screening method of identification by personal knowledge, credible witnesse(s) or materials(photo id's, non-photo id's etc.). Such as an unexpired State Drivers License, Passport, or State ID card, etc. At least one with a photo. And if your state has fingerprint requirements, make sure you record this in your Notary log book.
· Competency: Meeting with the individual(s) and talking. This can help identify their willingness to sign and their mental state. Also, if their are any communication problems (ie degrees of deafness or if a translator is needed) Get to know your signers by asking questions or just starting a conversation.
· Oath: Give an oath to impel truthfullness and deter fraud. Part of a Notary's role is to give oaths when called for. Don't skimp out on this one.
A Notary Public is a trusted position, it can not be taken for granted. Know how important your role as a Notary is and take steps to safeguard your clients information at all times. You won't regret it!
Therefore, a Notary must also, have courage and honor. To say "No" at a signing when you have doubts about the situation or the identity of the signer. Your bond and seal is at stake as well on each notarization.
"Courge": A person of integrity possesses moral courage and does what is right even if the personal cost is high. Always do what is right even when no one is watching. (Quote from the US Air Force)"
